Coming from a more traditional and pathological approach to therapy I was struck by sayings of Erickson such as...
" A problem can come out of nowhere, why shouldn't a solution "
His utilization of processes already existing within an individual to bring about positive changes in their lives showed his practical mastery... His own life personified his capacity to overcome problems. ( Erickson twice contracted polio and knew from his own experience what it was to deal with chronic pain.)

Milton Erickson - An American Healer

Milton EricksonMilton Erickson, psychologist and psychiatrist, was a genius who through his practical and humane approach to people and their problems revolutionized approaches to psychotherapy in the 20th century. Beyond his professional trainings and qualifications there existed within Erickson of his own uniqueness and importance and somehow he developed a way of being and doing that helped others recognize

Unique Individuals - Unique Interventions

Erickson saw each individual as unique and therefore requiring a unique approach to therapy and change. He also considered the subconscious mind as a great positive, creative resource in helping people reach solutions to their problems. He pioneered brief approaches to psychotherapy and legitimized the potent use of stories and metaphors to facilitate change.

Two Interviews about Milton Erickson and his Legacy

The interviews which follow are with two famous students of Erickson.

The first is with Dr. Stephen Gilligan who met Erickson at the age of 19. Dr. Gilligan has developed his own approach to therapy and change - SR (Self Relations Therapy). This is a very generous and personal interview in which Dr. Gilligan shares aspects of his time with Erickson and indicates his most important learnings from Erickson.

In the second interview, Dr. Jeffrey Zeig, who also had the good fortune to train directly with Erickson. Dr. Zeig discusses Dr. Erickson and Erickson's enormous impact on individuals and the practice of hypnotherapy.

Impactful Respectful Conversations

In Ericksonian hypnotherapy generalized problem based scripts are not used – an induction and intervention is crafted to suit the needs of the individual. The mood is respectful and humour is definitely allowed. Often the problem may be used in the development of the solution. The tone of the session may be so conversational that the therapeutic intent and potency inherent in it, may not be noticed until the process of change is actually underway.

Expect Change

Change is to be expected in life, Erickson assisted people to change their expectations to produce desired changes in their lives and break old patterns.
